Feeding a Dove

A co-worker where I work, Barb found an orphaned dove after the mom got caught by the neighbors puddy-tat. She brought the baby to work hoping that I could talk my wife into adopting it until he can fly the coup. Annette came out and picked the baby up , but first she had to feed him / her. I'll call the baby Angel from here out but will explain later. Feeding was not easy but she did get some food in Angel's crop with an eyedropper.

When Annette got Angel home, she scoured the internet to find out how to take care of a baby dove. 1st she found that you can't feed a dove the same way you feed cockatiels. Cockatiels sorta mutually open their mouths and the mother is able to get food into the baby's crop. Dove's beaks are long so the mother opens her mouth and the baby sticks their beak into the mother's beak. After a few attempts with different delivery systems, Annette found the best way to feed Angel with what we have here at home.

The name Angel is from what Barb and Annette agreed on, which was Michelangelo. Until Annette can determine the sex, she says she will call the baby Angel.

The Delivery

After two days, this was the first feed that the baby actually got excited about eating!
When I compared the dove to baby cockatiels I figured he was around 3 weeks. Annette found on the internet that this baby is around 1 week when we got him.
More later.

Meet Izzy

This is Izzy just after he was attacked as a baby... Annette rescued him and he is doing fine. She still hand feeds him but he is learning to eat some seed like millet.
